Ola’s AI unicorn Krutrim is teaming up with Lenovo to build India’s largest supercomputer.
The deets: unlike most AI startups that rely on imported chips and rented cloud services, Krutrim is going full-stack, developing its own AI models, chips, and cloud infrastructure.
This supercomputer will be hosted on Krutrim’s cloud, and will provide the computing firepower needed to train advanced AI systems, making AI development more accessible for Indian businesses.
The move aligns with India’s push to cut reliance on foreign AI infrastructure and build a self-sufficient AI ecosystem.
Krutrim is also working on Krutrim 3, its most advanced AI model yet.
Context: founder Bhavish Aggarwal had committed ₹2,000 crore to the company, with plans to scale that up to ₹10,000 crore next year.
Why lenovo: Lenovo is strengthening its AI hardware presence in India. The company aims to produce all its PC models locally by 2028, with plans to boost local production from 30% to 50% next year.
AI-powered servers will start rolling out from Lenovo’s Indian manufacturing unit on April 1, while a new AI R&D center in Bengaluru is set to expand research and talent.
With Krutrim’s AI expertise and Lenovo’s hardware strength, India is taking a big step toward reducing reliance on foreign AI technology.
