Reliance to build Asia’s largest solar battery plant

Reliance NU Suntech, a unit of Reliance Power, is building Asia’s largest solar + battery energy project at one location.

The green mega-project will need an investment of up to ₹10,000 crore. A 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) has been signed with Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) to lock in power sales for the long haul.

The deets: Reliance Power, part of the Anil Ambani-led group, is known for generating power from coal, gas, and renewables. With this project, it's taking a big bet on solar and not just panels, but storage too.

The deal includes 930 MW of solar power integrated with a 465 MW/1,860 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). This means the power generated by solar panels will be stored in batteries and released even when the sun’s gone down, keeping supply stable.

To meet the 930 MW commitment, Reliance NU Suntech will install 1,700 MWp worth of solar panels. The electricity will be sold to the Solar Energy Corporation of India at a fixed rate of ₹3.53 per kWh for the next 25 years.

Why it matters: 930 MW of solar power can light up around 1.5 million homes but solar doesn’t work at night. That’s where the 465 MW battery system comes in. It can store energy for hours (1,860 MWh worth), making sure homes, businesses, and factories get steady power even after sunset.

This isn’t just more electricity, it’s reliable, clean, and future-ready power. It means fewer blackouts, less coal, and more confidence in India’s renewable push.
